DESCRIPTION:Our annual Women’s Retreat will meet once again at Camp Wightman on beautiful Billings Lake in Griswold\, CT\, on Friday\, Oct 17th and Saturday\, Oct. 18th.  The cost is $115 Per Person. This includes three meals\, and accommodations for the Friday night sleepover. \nThe theme for this year’s women’s retreat is The Bible Never Said That. We will be taking a closer look at sayings that are attributed to the Bible that may or may not be biblically based as well as looking more closely at some of the more familiar biblical stories. \nThe schedule will include quiet individual prayer time\, as well as puzzles\, music\, and s’mores around the campfire. DESCRIPTION:WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN ABOUT LETTERBOXING? \nSun\, Oct 19th at 11am in Fellowship Hall \nA fun activity for the whole family. Loved by children and adults.  This event is sponsored by expert letterboxers: Wanda and Pete \nChurch children and their families will be introduced to the fundamentals of letterboxing with Kim (Lowland Lass from CT)\, who has graciously offered to set up her letterboxing intro program! You will have the opportunity to make a stamp and a logbook. At 11:30AM\, there will be “meet/greet/eat” with other letterboxer. \nThen we will have a nice letterboxers’ potluck picnic beginning around noontime! Later on in the afternoon around 1PM there will be a demonstration by reggicat and her remarkable miniature speed carves. \nOPEN TO EVERYONE AT THE CHURCH AND FRIENDS OF THE CHURCH COME FOR SOME OR ALL OF THE EVENT

SUMMARY:Reformation Sunday and Kirkin' o' the Tartans
DESCRIPTION:We will celebrate Reformation Sunday on October 26th at both the 8am and 10am services with our traditional Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans. This reminds us of the roots of Presbyterianism in Scotland. \nClan and family tartans became popular in the mid-18th century Scotland. As part of the effort to bring Scottish Highlanders under control in the 1700’s\, the Act of Proscription was passed and the wearing of the tartan was banned. From that period came the legend of Highlanders secretly bringing pieces of tartan cloth into their kirks to be blessed. \nIn the mid-1900’s\, Presbyterian Minister Reverend Peter Marshall gave a sermon at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church entitled “Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans” and the celebration was born out of subsequent services. The people of God have celebrated their faith and heritage across time. \nToday churches of many denominations celebrate the Kirkin’ O’ the Tartan service. We honor those who came before us as we remember those who suffered to reform the Christian church in Great Britain and beyond.
