“Because of God’s Great Love…”

          Retha was coming to end of her days. Retha had lived a long and faithful life and her body was giving out. I went to the nursing care facility where Retha would spend her final days and sat by her bedside. She asked me to pray for her. We held hands. We prayed. Then I read some words to Retha from the bible. They are words that have comforted and sustained me numerous times and I wanted Retha to have those words during her time of need. So I read,

          “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

          Retha was quiet for a moment. Then she said, “Those verses are from Lamentations. I have always found that very interesting. Here is a person lamenting how difficult life is, and yet somehow they were able to remember in the midst of their trial God’s great love and faithfulness.”

          People like Retha bring great joy to a pastor. Retha understood that life does bring trials. Life brings struggles. Life brings heartbreak. Life brings loss. Life brings sadness. Life brings difficulty. And life brings pain. Jeremiah wrote Lamentations and he had experienced all those things and more. But what Jeremiah understood, what Retha understood, and what I hope we will all come to understand during this time of crisis, is that the Lord’s great love is always with us, his compassions never fail. Every morning, day after day after day, every single morning, God meets us with his love and compassion. So Jeremiah and Retha and people of faith all through the ages say, “Great is your faithfulness.”

          Today I give you the words to a beautiful hymn that comes from Lamentations, from the third chapter and verses 22 and 23. The hymn is Great is Thy Faithfulness. After you read the words I encourage you to click on the link and listen to this great hymn of faith. Friends, because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
